Chapter 11

Jake looked out at the next ranch, his eyes straining to see Lila. She hadn’t shown up for breakfast at the diner this morning, and he hadn’t caught her on the range either.

“Where is she?” Jake growled as George walked up to him.

“The neighborly thing to do would be to go check on her,” George offered. “Want me to head over there?” he asked, teasing his boss because George could read the writing on the wall. His boss was snookered by their lovely neighbor. Too bad his boss didn’t know what was happening to him. But George also knew that Jake might just deck him if that problem was brought up.

No, it was better if the younger man figured this one out for himself.

“Hell,” Jake grumbled and pulled his keys out of the pocket of his jeans. “I’ll be back in a few minutes. She’s probably adopted a duck with a broken wing or something.”

He flew down the street, skidding to a halt on her driveway and practically flinging himself out of his truck. If she so much as looked at him cross-eyed, he was taking her into that damn house and making love to her until she was screaming out his name. He couldn’t take any more cold showers! She was his woman and it was time that she understood what that meant!

He rounded the house and skidded to a stop, his eyes almost popping out of his head when he saw her. She was sitting on the back porch, sunshine streaming through her copper colored hair and making it shine. Her face was wreathed in laughter with Duke on one side of her, Rocky leaning against the improving hound and…he blinked, carefully opening his eyes to try and verify his eyes.

Impossible, he thought. She couldn’t have!

He closed his eyes, shaking his head to try and shake some sense into it because Lila simply couldn’t have adopted more animals. But as he opened his eyes, he looked at his woman who was now completely surrounded by, not just one cat, but three cats and an entire litter of kittens! They were all meowing and pressing up against her.

Damn it, that was his plan!

And he didn’t want to just press up against her. If those fingers ever ran down his body like they were now doing to one of the kittens, he was fairly sure that he would be purring too.

“Cats?” he snapped, watching as her eyes whipped up to his. “You have cats now?”

Lila smiled, feeling more than a little giddy as Jake looked down at her. He looked so masculine, so raw and fired up. And goodness, he was handsome!

“I like cats,” she told him, scratching Scooby behind his ears as the ragged cat stepped up onto her lap. Duke was sitting on the porch, his tail thumping against the wood as he lifted his head in greeting.
